In total, there are 8 ITA lift truck classifications. These classifications group lift trucks based on their power source or fuel type and application.

  • Class I – Electric Sitdown Counterbalanced Forklifts
    • Found in indoor warehouses and facilities
    • Can use either cushion or pneumatic tires
    • Powered by a large industrial battery
  • Class II – Electric Narrow Aisle Lift Trucks
    • Found in narrow aisle facilities (less than 10′ aisle widths)
    • Powered by a large industrial battery
  • Class III – Electric Hand Lift Trucks
    • Found in retail, warehouses and docks
    • Low lift pallet trucks designed for shorter distances
    • Typically lift between 3,000 and 6,000 lbs.
  • Class IV – Internal Combustion Counterbalanced Forklifts (Cushion Tires Only)
    • Found in indoor facilities
    • Sit-down internal combustion forklifts with a wide range of lift capacities and heights
    • Can run on diesel, LPG or gas
  • Class V – Class IV – Internal Combustion Counterbalanced Forklifts (Pneumatic Tires Only)
    • Found in outdoor applications
    • Sit-down internal combustion forklifts with a wide range of lift capacities and heights
    • Can run on diesel, LPG or gas
  • Class VI – Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Tow Trucks
    • Mostly found in large indoor facilities
    • Focused on towing rather than lifting
    • Can be sitdown or ride-on
  • Class VII – Rough Terrain Forklifts
    • Found in outdoor applications with rough or uneven terrain
    • Generally use internal combustion engines
  • Class VIII – Personnel and Burden Carriers
    • Mostly found in large indoor facilities
    • Designed to carry employees and small loads throughout a facility
